Bingo, google reset the mobile sync option to inactivate. All you need to do it’s go to google apps administration page(you can manage the domain if you are the admin for the google apps) and choose Setting => Mobile => Check “Enable Google sync” (as the image below)

Wait for 10 – 30 minutes, disconnect from internet (by switch “airport mode” on and off or reboot your iPhone). You will get ur push mail back. Time to send the emails you wasn’t able to send!

Thanks to the A4 Chipset. iPad can decode more complicated videos.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:
Change the dimensions to 1280 x720 HD (that’s 720P) when you encode it in H.264 .

Yes, You might say, “ya ya ya… another apple fan boy is talking licking Apple’s ass”. Maybe? Maybe not? I have to admit. At first, I dont think i will get an iPad. I was thinking. No webcam? 3G/wifi model is $130 more than the wifi version? I am not getting it.

As time goes by, I realized i was missing the point. The reason i need an iPad it’s not b/c it can go on web, check email, use apps. I can do all of the above on my laptop or iPhone.

The reasons i think it’s revolution is because I can read books on it, with COLOR.

I was amazed when i saw the Amazon kindle before. It’s slim and light, and the e-ink looks nice and comfortable for the eyes, but i never bought it. Why? It’s because, first, it’s not in color. I am a designer, and I love reading book with a lot of nice illustration or photos. Most of the design/technology book are full of photos, charts. Amazon and SONY sticks with e-ink and they only get some grey-scale images which is not really ideal for design and technology books (or even any normal non-fiction book we are reading today.)

User interface is another problem for kindle and SONY reader. Don’t get me wrong. The next and pervious buttons are looking useful on kindle, but other than that, the user interface is just what we expected in DOS era. (If you used computer long enough, you will know what i meant). It might not be bad for fiction books, but it’s really bad for reference books. We want to quick search and find the page we are looking for, access the content quickly.

Not only the color screen, the ability of handling 3D objects and smooth graphic/video playback are the essential points to make iPad stands out in digital reading. Oh, did i mention now you can finally carry all the books with you when you are in the move?

We have problem to carry the design/technology books with us because they are usually big and heavy. Carrying one is heavy enough, and i am not gonna even mentioned about the advantage wen you move to another place. Last time I moved from upstate New York to New york city. Half of the boxes i mailed were books. They are heavy and taking a lot of space. They are not good for moving or storage in a small room in NYC.

iPad provides a new platform for us to re-think and re-define “a book”. What’s a book? What kind of content can be put on a book? How are we going to carry a book? How is the experience we have with a book. How can i keep my book looks clean and nice? What if i lost my book? The answer you have now might not be the same after we are using iPad.

Therefore, I think today is a big day in history. Human has been reading for centuries. A new era for reading is coming. I wish this is a good start. No matter iPad will be the most successful reading device or not. I think it changes the way we read, and the we as human are moving forward.

This video sums up the concept of my thesis project. SiftU aggregates all the status, photo, video you uploaded to private online services into one personal database. You can search and look back your life, and learn more about yourself. Beta coming soon. Stay tune.

Second semester in Parsons, I was building a Flash application that provides a dynamic multi-lingual support touch panel system for hotel guest services, named “ServeSmart”. It is intended to help international travelers overcome language barriers and enrich their hotel experience.

第二個學期在 帕森設計學院(英譯), 我設計了一個 Flash 的應用程式, 它提供動態多國語言觸控系統用於飯店顧客服務服務. 名叫”聰明服務”(英譯). 它被定位成幫助國際旅客克服語言障礙和提供更美好的住宿體驗.

In summer 2009, before the beginning of the semester, while I was jogging, an idea came to my head. Online content sharing that we do everyday might actually helps long distance relationship. The most important thing in romantic relationship is sharing, sharing the time together and sharing the life experience together. If people are in long distance relationship, the first thing they got hit might be lack of “sharing”. Since they r not physically together, it will be hard to know what the other is doing and what kind of environment/situation he is dealing with. The only way s/he gets a sense of what the other doing is by writing or talking to each other. The code for this project is “Stringed”.

Project “String” is a platform that two people must sign up an account together. The joint account will provide a space for them to combine all the content they share online. (Status, photo, video, even restaurant review). They can see all the information in a timeline base page. There is something interesting that brought up by my thesis studio professor David Carroll. He mentioned the thing he will be interested to see in this platform is the crossed points of two people’s life. Couples share their time together to have some life experience together.

在2009年開學前的夏天, 我在慢跑的途中, 有個靈感出現在我腦海. 我們每天線上分享的點點滴滴也許可以幫助遠距離戀愛. 因為在戀愛的過程裡最重要的不就是互相分享, 分享在一起的時間, 分享在一起的生活. 如果雙方處於遠距離戀愛, 第一個要面對的就是”分享”變少了. 雙方沒有住在附近, 自然很難了解對方目前的生活環境跟遇到的問題. 唯一能做的就是透過文字或是電話來溝通. 這個專案叫做”情牽”(英譯). (靈感自七夕, 千里姻緣一線牽, 戀愛中的人好像有跟無形的線牽引著對方)

專案”情牽”(英譯)是一個平台, 兩個人必需同時申請一個帳號. 這個帳號會提供他(她)們一個空間, 匯集雙方線上分享的點點滴滴 (狀態, 照片,影片, 甚至餐廳評論). 他們可以在一個時間軸架構的頁面, 觀看所有的資訊. 我的論文教授 卡若 . 大衛 (英譯) 提到如果這個平台可以找出雙方在一起做的事情, 會很有趣. 不管是在實際生活中或是線上. (如下圖所示)

I began researching and making rapid prototype to ensure I am technically capable to execute this project, e.g., Facebook connect, twitter API implantation, flickr API implantation. While I was doing research on how to improve long distance relationship with the platform I am thinking to build, some reactions from my friends actually make me doubt about the project. They were talking about maybe I should just make a online sex simulated platform with physical computing knowledge built in. That will significantly improve the long distance relationship.

Although they were joking about it, I began to doubt if this is what people really need for their relationship? Exposing information about themselves to their love one is “sharing”, but in another way, that’s what we call “Spy”. I began to question myself if i will be willing to share all the “private content I share/upload to online services to the person i like.

Am i really interested to improve people’s romantic relationship? Am I trying to do the job that cupid or God suppose to do? Do I even believe in long distance relationship? I cleared my head and suddenly, I realized what I really interesting here is building a database which contains all the information that I share online. This is the turning point of my thesis, from improving romantic relationship to improve the understanding myself through the achievement of online sharing content. Therefore another code was born which is “IN” (Intersections).

我開始做研究跟快速製作一些測試去確定我有足夠的專業能力去完成這個專案. 例如臉書(英譯)的連結, 推特(英譯) API, Flickr API 等等的佈植. 當我在研究怎樣利用這個平台幫助遠距離戀愛的同時, 我朋友對這個專案的反應開始讓我對這個案子產生困惑. 他(她)們說也許我應該做一個利用實體電腦智慧, 線上虛擬實境性愛平台. 這一定會對遠距離戀愛有所幫助.

就算我知道他們只是開玩笑, 我開始困惑在戀愛中,人們是否會需要這個平台. 暴露他(她)們生活的資訊給對方好聽是叫分享, 不好聽一點就會是偷窺. 我開始問我自己是否我自己會願意分享所有我線上分享的私人資訊給我喜歡的人?

我真的有興趣幫助人們遠距離戀愛嘛? 我是否嚐試著做上帝跟邱比特(英譯)的工作? 我是否相信遠距離戀愛? 我整理了思緒, 剎時間, 我了解我感到興趣的是建立一個擁有我所有線上分享資料的資料庫. 這是個我論文的轉捩點,從增進遠距離戀愛到利用我線上分享的紀錄來更了解自己. 這個專案的名字改叫 “IN” 交叉點(英譯).

In early stage of “IN” is marketed and positioned as an online diary platform which not only replaces the existing old traditional hand-written, paper bounded diary. It also tries to use the advantage of technology, so people can sort and search the information in their online diary. Some Design prototypes were made.

在”IN” 交叉點(英譯), 早期階段被定位成線上日記平台, 它不只取代現在手寫,裝訂成冊的日記. 它也常是利用科技的優點, 讓人們可以利用他們的日記來搜尋需要的資訊. 我製作了這些早期設計原形.

The platform was designed browsed with latest update and searched by keyword, geo-location and time. The bonus feature here is to compare the timeline with your friend. Matching by the approx. geo-location and time from the content, the platform will calculate all the crossed point from those two people. It’s more like shared memory in a glance. This feature was adapted from the pervious project “Stringed”.

At the same time, I questioned myself if this is really an online diary, and am I trying to make an online diary for myself? After I have thought about this question carefully, I know what I am not making a online diary platform since I don’t even write diary. My goal here is to archive the information/status I share online in daily life. I can use this archived information to know myself better.

At the same time, i questioned myself if this is really a online diary, and am i trying to make a online diary for myself? After i have thought about this question carefully, I know what i am not making a online diary platform since i dont even write diary. My goal here is to archive the information/status I share online in daily life. I can use these archived information to know myself better.

IIn the past, we all have control of the content we share or keep in our life. You diary will not disappear or destroyed unless your house is on fire or you chose to do it. When micro-blogging and status update slowly replace our habit from document daily life in a diary. We have lost the right to control the content we shared.

這個平台被設計成使用者觀看最後分享的資訊和利用關鍵字, 地點, 和時間來搜尋. 附加的功能是可以跟朋友比較時間軸. 利用分享資訊內含的靠近的地點跟時間, 系統平台會計算兩個人在一起的部份. 這就好像在一起的時光一覽表. 這個功能是取自於上一個專案”情牽”.

“交叉點”(英譯)在開始的時候因為論文課而被定位成線上日記. 在同一堂課的人認為這是個線上日記. 在這同時, 我反問我自己這是否是個線上日記, 我是否在做一個線上日記給我自己? 在我仔細思考這個問題之後, 我知道我自己不是在做一個線上日記因為我根本不寫日記. 我的目標是把我分享的資訊存檔, 所以日後我可以用這些資訊了解我自己.

從前, 我們擁有自己分享出去資訊的掌控權. 你的日記不會消失或是被摧毀除非你家失火或是你選擇(讓她消失). 當微博客(英譯) 和狀態分享慢慢的取代我們記錄生活的習慣. 我們已經喪絲掌控自己分享出去資訊的權力.

Facebook owns you status update on Facebook. They have rights to delete it anytime and there is nothing you can do. Is it true? Sadly, it’s a “yes”. I have been using Facebook since it was born in 2007, and last entry I can get back from the server using Facebook API is August 2008. Where are the statuses before August 2008? All the memory and status i shared was gone. It’s very depressed to me, a person who deeply believes digital media can helps us to archive the memory that won’t fade out like traditional media.

Now, you might ask, you never thought of this problem might accrue, and you might not even notice it. That’s because there is no way you can search your status archived on Facebook. There is no way you can search the status you shared on twitter. They are good at providing your recent status to the world or your friend, but there is no ways you can look back at your life and see what you have shared. All you can do is hitting that “More” button that if you clicks 200 times you might see the status you shared 3 months ago.

Private companies controlled our data. They use the content we share to know about us. When they know about us than us. Is there nothing we can do with it?

Of course, there is always something we can do about it. It will be solved by my thesis project. The code for this project is “IN”(in my life) at this point. As I finally positioned the direction of the thesis, I am also researching the possible way to visualize the information on this platform. I was inspired by the diagonal prospective to show the content. It gives the depth of the time when we display items in order on a diagonal timeline. First I was inspired by the Time Machine commercial & Timeline 3D software.

私人公司掌控了我們的資訊, 他們進而利用那些資訊來了解我們, 當然他們比我們來了解自己, 我們難道什麼都不能做嗎?

當然, 總是有些我們能做的事情. 我的論文將會解決這個問題, 到目前這個階段我的論文更名成”IN”(在我的生活中)(英譯). 我終於定位了論文的走向. 我同時也在研究如何在這個平台上視覺化這些資訊. 對角線平面給我了一些靈感, 而這個靈感最先來自於時光機廣告跟三度空間時間軸軟體.

我從小就不喜歡有人吸菸, 因為我知道香煙是一種慢性自殺. (包括二手菸) 加上煙味實在是很臭 (煙草的味道倒是還ok), 因此我選擇了這個主題. 我希望這個短片可以提醒吸菸對身體造成的影響, 也許可以幫助癮君子戒煙. 就像背景配樂的歌詞一樣. “擇日再死”. 我調整了背景音樂的速度跟音調去配合動畫.這首原唱是 Madonna.

I was designing my landing page for SiftU. Since the website is not working yet, i would like people to get the first hand message about the website, so i can get enough beta tester when the site is launched.

Traditionally, website will ask the visitors to leave their email address here. It will involve with tons of annoying PHP email list and mess email admin pages. Thanks for the modern technology and Twitter. We can simply put on a follow me on twitter icon. People can click and follow us easily. It reduced the chance to become junk emails and make the sign up process easier.

Twiiter logo is tricky. They didn’t came out a good design following me on twiiter icon officially. They didn’t even provide media kit for branding. I googled the twitter logos, and didn’t find something I like. They are 3D, and i dont think they match the style of the website. Therefore, I did extended research on the icons.

Luckily, I found these nice designed icons. You can download directly from HERE or visited Mark Thoburn’s blog. It’s free and awesome. (even with Original PSD).

Therefore, today I decided to research for the solution on this. (to fix this annoying problem since years ago)

This is the window you usually see when you have Microsoft 2008 or 2004 installed. The “Microsoft User Data” Folder will always be there no matter how many times you have removed it. It will be automatically recreated every time you open an Microsoft product on your mac. It’s VERY VERY annoying.

Thankfully, this is the solution. Simply move “Microsoft User Data” folder from “Documents” to Users/ (YOUR USER NAME)/Library/Preferences/

DONE!! You will never see that annoying folder again in your Documents Folder. Thank god. :p

I did some research on the landing pages from the websites/application i liked (used) the most. Please let me know if you have any landing pages you like, so i can add them here..

First, there are 9 tips/rules for the successful landing page. I am sorting the information i research online into a list.

1. Make sure your page loads quickly: Strive for an 8-second or less page load.
   
2. Leave Plenty of Whitespace (Think simple) – Visitors don’t read – they scan the text.
   
3. Put your most critical landing page elements in the upper 300 pixels of the page: Usability research shows over half of your site visitors will NOT scroll “below the fold.
4. Have a Clear and Direct Headline + Make your first paragraph short , no more than 1-2 lines - Your landing pages should designed so the headline is first thing a user sees upon landing. First impressions on landing pages are as important as the offline world.
5. Use a recognizable layout
   Users don’t want to think about finding the information. Place the information in the most obvious spot.
6. Don’t have too much navigation – Don’t overload the user with navigational possibilities. Both SEO-wise and usabilty-wise too many links on a page is a bad thing.
7. Write to deliver a clear, persuasive message, not to showcase your creativity or ability to turn a clever phrase. - This is business, not a personal expression of your art.
8. Amplify Buttons – Attracting attention is what the main action buttons are all about.
9. Soften the Call to Action – Direct words like “Buy,” “Add to Cart” or “Subscribe” indicate a commitment that the visitor may not be ready to make and can lower conversion rates.

Here are the screen shoots of the pages i like.

Basically it’s replaced all the Flash with an default icon. So the site won’t load the flash in the first place until you click on the Flash you would like to play. I have been using for few days, and it truly make my Macbook Pro runs cooler and faster when I browse the websites.

The good thing about it is you can add the sites you would like to allow to open the Flash by default (eg.theFWA or youtube). Enjoy and tell Flash to Kiss my Ass now.

Fresh Berry Trifle is the my new favorite from FreshDirect. It’s light and healthy. It’s not too sweet and it won’t break your diet plan too much. The berries are all over the place :p. Sweet-tart lemon cream balanced the sour taste from the berries. It’s prefect combination .

I dont really understand why they became so popular. They are trying to get into the US market now. We will see .

When all the airlines try to cut down the expense in onboard services, JetBlue reversed the strategy. They understand people still have all the needs onboard, and maybe strip down all the services to cut down the price won’t be the only solution. All other airlines might re-consider when they remove all the services we used to enjoy. I will take JetBlue or Virgin America for sure , if all the old airlines are still thinking they are irreplaceable?? LOL

I always love the Blue Potato Chips on JetBlue. When you take another airline, dont forget to bring a vending robot with you since there is no snacks service there.

I think this is the best design in the collection. The airlines reduced the weight/number of the luggages when the oil price goes high, but they never give back all the allowance that we used to have when the oil price went down. What a Jerk.

Leg room is another problem in most of the economic class. The old cabin layout is just not gonna work when we grow taller than ever. I am so thankful for JetBlue and Virgin America who provides more leg room for us.

When you are onboard, there is nowhere else you can get your food/drinks other than from the service crew. When they stop serving for the basic human needs, and try to charge everything. I guess this is all we can do. Biting the stick and dreaming there is a mashpillow .

When nothing is gonna work, keep dreaming and erasing bad memory will be a good idea.

When you travel next time, maybe it’s time for you to think again about the airline you choose. Are they trying to make you use these Gadgets or they are just some stupid greedy companies?

The cell phone fell into a “black hole” which sent it back to 100 years ago. (while people still rarely use a “landline”(home phone). There wasn’t any wireless tower, so they are connected by the “full moon”. HUH. I guess the wireless company will be interested in this kind of technology, so they will will save tons of money by building more towers and satellites.

Knowing how cellphone works actually killed the story. I was like -.- “oh..ya right” during the movie. If i am less tech-savvy, i might enjoy this movie better. The main actress wasn’t that cute :p, and i guess that’s another disappointment.

I will recommend this movie to who believe in time travel and doesn’t know wireless technology too well.

It has been almost 1.5 months i ordered $29.99 windows 7 student special “upgrade” version of 64-bit windows 7 HomePremium / Professional.

The reason I couldn’t install windows 7 on the machine was because Microsoft is being an ass. They made $29.99 an upgrade version, so it’s extra difficult to upgrade from WindowsXP.

After i asked the Master Google, I found the solution yesterday.

1. Create a new virtual machine and install without using the serial number, this is technically a trial install.

2. After installl is complete launch the install DVD from inside Windows 7 (important) and do an upgrade install, then enter your serial number and complete the install.

It does authenticate without issue.

This method takes time, and you get a nice fresh install. Also this does not violate EULA as long as you have the serial for your old WinXP (if this is a concern).

It’s smooth and only use 4% usage on CPU of macbook Pro. Thanks to VMware fusion 3 and windows 7. It runs much better than it was with WindowsXP.

@stevevarga asked me if i ever used VirtualBox. I heard about it but i never used it. Since it’s free, i thought it might be a bomb. Surprised, It’s not bad. It’s free and run smooth after installation. It went very slow when i installed windows 7, and it made the beach ball kept spinning. It take 2-3 times of CPU usage comparing to Fusion, but i guess it’s still not bad as a freeware. Since VMware Fusion charge more and more on upgrade. I might jump onto VirtualBox one day .

Prior to this launch, this result did not appear, because all of the relevant content is contained in an XML file loaded by a SWF file.

To date, when Google encounters SWF files on the web, we can:

• Index textual content displayed as a user interacts with the file. We click buttons and enter input, just like a user would.
• Discover links within Flash files.
• Load external resources and associate the content with the parent file.
• Support common JavaScript techniques for embedding Flash, such as SWFObject and SWFObject2.
• Index sites scripted with AS1 and AS2, even if the ActionScript is obfuscated. Update on June 19, 2009: We index sites with AS3 as well. The ActionScript version isn’t particularly relevant in our Indexing process, so we support older versions of AS in addition to the latest.

It’s nice but i guess it’s not good enough. It’s tall and bulky. Therefore, they were working on a redesign. I saw this in supermarket today and i just can’t walk away with it.

In My life” is a web-based personal life achieving/search software for personal life. By automatically collecting the information online and pairing it with Geo-location tracking, Users can look back at their life in a simple, automatic, organized and searchable manner.

User scenario

Kitty is a 26 years old student who graduate from NYU in 2008. She has been broadcasting her life on facebook , twitter and social network just like other students. Yesterday, she was trying to recall her memory about her life when she was writing her thesis. She couldn’t remember much about it since it has been a while and she has been through a lot after she began to work in SOHO as a web developer. Therefore, she tried to search from google to see if she can find anything related to her thesis project and life.

WOW, it actually work. Not only she is pulling all the information related to thesis she shared on the internet, but all the information also is organized by fuzzy matching geo-location and time period. All the memory she had while she was writing the thesis slowly came back to her head like a diary. She realized she spend a lot of time in union square at that time, and she still go to union square regularly recently. Therefore, she refine her search with Gro-location with a google map.

She typed “union square” and search, A list of the things she did in union square display according to the drop pin where he placed, and it’s sorted with the time, So she can look back at her life in union square easily. That might take a long long time if she search all the content she shared before. Life is beautiful with a tool to help she look back at her life. She learn from the mistake and always enjoy the sweet memory.

I almost throw the scanner away last week, and I was giving it a last try tonight. I found the related answer from Epson Support site.

1. Quit Photoshop CS4.
2. Download the update bundle from Adobe.

3. Browse to the English > Goodies >Optional Plug-ins > Import-Export folder.
4. Copy the TWAIN plug-in file to the Applications > Adobe Photoshop CS4 >Plug-ins > Import-Export folder on your hard disk.
5. Restart Photoshop to enable the plug-in.

Thankfully, finally it works.
